Here on the OneNote team, we’re wrapping up summer and getting ready to head back to school. So, let’s dive right in this month to share updates to inking, OneNote Class and Staff Notebooks, OneNote Web Clipper and more.

Think with ink in OneNote for Windows 10

New key updates take inking to the next level, providing more dynamic experiences and greater control of the ink. See ink in action on our new OneNote ink website and learn how it can help you in school or in day-to-day life.

• Ink math assistant—Handwrite any problem—from basic math to quadratic equations—and get the help of a digital tutor. OneNote already recognizes your handwriting and solves any formula for you, but we didn’t stop there. You can now do one better than calculators by learning with our step-by step instructions. Get the answer to your equation and learn to do it on your own for next time. Office 365 subscribers can get started today.

• Ink replay—Save time, get focused and see the process behind the ink. Now you can rewind and replay ink strokes in OneNote as an Office 365 subscriber. For instance, label a map by hand and then reveal the content at your own pace to help students identify states or to give them hints along the way. Or use OneNote in a team meeting to whiteboard ideas and then later use replay to see how your team got to the end point.

• Pencil—Bring more of the capabilities of pencil and paper to the digital page. Sketch out ideas with new shading abilities that add detail and depth to your drawing. You can also write out a quick note or first draft in pencil for the natural “work in progress” feeling of pencil on paper. To use OneNote’s new pencil feature, you’ll need the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

OneNote Web Clipper

It only gets better and better. We updated the OneNote Web Clipper to put you in even more control of what you clip from the web. New features this month include:

• Bookmarks—As a result of a top user request, you can now save a simple link and description of the page.
• Text and image selection—Right-click any image or selection or text on a web page and clip the content. For the selected content, you will be able to highlight and change font type and size in the preview window.
• New Edge extension—With the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the OneNote Web Clipper extension is now available for the Edge browser. Check it out! Be sure to restart Edge after installing the extension.
• What’s new—Whenever we make major changes, we’ll provide a “change log” of what we updated—so you can stay up-to-date with what’s new with the OneNote Web Clipper.

All of these features are available on all browsers including Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer. Update to the latest version of your extension or download the extension at http://ift.tt/1iUZT4U.

Back to school with OneNote

Teachers and students alike have been using OneNote in the classroom for years to give real-time feedback with a combination of type, ink, audio recording and more. Heading into this school year, we’re excited to share with you our first wave of new experiences to help students, teachers and school administrators.

Learning Tools for OneNote supports more languages and themes and is now generally available

Learning Tools for OneNote are now out of preview and generally available for the OneNote 2013 and 2016 desktop apps and in many new languages (over 35 for the toolbar and four for dictation) and with new features like new color themes. The tools help everyone improve their reading and writing skills, including gifted learners, students with learning differences and students with combinations of unique abilities. New color themes include green, yellow, blue and pink.  

OneNote Class Notebook updates and general availability for the add-in

Building on the great momentum we’ve seen with the OneNote Class Notebook, we have now rolled out new teacher-inspired features and improvements across 44 languages and 63 markets. These enhancements for the 2016/2017 school year will help teachers save valuable time in the classroom and enable even better organization in class notebooks. Find out more in our recent blog post.

Use shared iPads more effectively in the class room

Shared iPad is a new iOS 9 feature to benefit schools that share devices among students and still want to provide a personalized experience for each of them. Before class begins, teachers can assign any student any shared iPad. When students sign in to the shared iPad, new OneNote features help them use their personalized OneNote across multiple shared iPads by doing the following:

• Office 365 sign-in credentials roam with students when they sign in to OneNote.
• Notebook Picker helps open the right recent notebook at the beginning of class.
• New syncing indicator makes it easier to manage content saving to the cloud, including attachments, so students never lose work when they leave their shared iPad.

Insert PDFs and Word documents in OneNote Online

Now you can insert PDFs and Word documents straight into the pages of your notebooks, similar to the desktop experience. Work easily with documents in your classroom without leaving OneNote and keep students focused and lessons organized.

That sure was a lot to cover! As you can see, the team has been busy this summer working on new features and feature enhancements to make your work, home and school lives easier.
