5G is the new fad in tech town and most major smartphone manufacturers are jumping onto the bandwagon and launching 5G supported smartphones much before the new network technology has even been made available to consumers. Xiaomi has also followed suit and launched the 5G edition of its flagship Mi Mix 3 smartphone from last year with an updated chipset while retaining the same sliding design.

The Mi Mix 3 originally sported the Snapdragon 845 SoC from last year, which of course did not have 5G capabilities, so Xiaomi has swapped that out for the new 7nm based Snapdragon 855 SoC which has support for 5G networks, making the smartphone futureproof. With the new X50 modem from Qualcomm, Xiaomi claims up to 2Gbps of downlink speeds.

The rest of the specifications remains identical to the original Mi Mix 3. There’s a 6.39-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with no notch resulting in an impressive 93.4% screen-to-body ratio. Given that there is no notch or forehead on the front, the dual 24+2MP dual camera setup along with the usual sensors are housed in a magnetic sliding mechanism.

The body is constructed completely out of ceramic with a 4-sided curved back. The rear has a dual camera setup, both rated at 12MP each with support for AI. The battery is a relatively big 3800mAh unit along with support for Quick Charge 4+. There’s also support for wireless charging, and Xiaomi has also included a dedicated voice assistant button on the left of the smartphone which when pressed, launches Xiaomi’s Xiao AI voice assistant in the Chinese region but the global variants will be mapped to launch Google Assistant.

The Mi Mix 3 5G Edition will retail starting at 599 Euros and while there is no official date for release, the smartphone is expected to launch sometime in May this year. Availability outside of Europe is currently unknown.
