On the eve of MWC 2019 in Barcelona, Oppo has announced its proprietary 10x optical zoom technology in an event titled “Get Closer”. Oppo spoke about its triple camera setup with the primary lens being a 48MP shooter, a secondary ultra-wide angle lens with a focal length of just 16mm and finally a third telephoto lens with 10x lossless zoom.

While we’re used to seeing telephoto cameras on modern-day smartphones, especially after Apple popularized it with the iPhone 7+, those are generally limited to 2X-3X optical zoom. Oppo however has believed in pushing the limits when it comes to zoom photography on smartphones and this was evident when they showcased their 5X lossless zoo tech back in 2017. 2 years down the line, they’ve doubled that number and managed to achieve 10X lossless zoom.

The telephoto lens that Oppo has developed has an astonishing 160mm focal length which would help in getting extremely close to the subject. By using something known as the D-cut method they have managed to cut down on the size of the lens to just 6.7mm thick. They also claim to use a large sensor to accumulate more detail into the shots.

A smart and helpful addition by Oppo here is the inclusion of OIS on the primary as well as the telephoto lens which would result in less blurry shots, especially given the fact that generally while zooming in, it’s not that easy to maintain stability, resulting in shaky images. That’s pretty much taken care of now by Oppo.

What excites us more is the fact that Oppo claims that this technology is very much readily available for mass production and we should be seeing the implementation in Oppo’s next flagship smartphone which they claim would come some time around Q2 2019. Undoubtedly, this is a huge leap in terms of mobile photography and is a fine example of what brands are able to do with cameras on smartphones, given the size limitations. In 2017,the company had showcased the 5X lossless zoom technology but that never made it to a commercial product. That should change this time.
