Reliance Jio Partners with Samsung for Implementing a Country Wide NB-IoT Service in India

Reliance Jio has now partnered with Samsung Electronics in order to bring LTE coverage to 99 percent of the Indian population. As part of the agreement, Jio will improve network capacity across the country.

Reliance and Jio together are aiming at making way for a fully digital India. A crucial part of this effort will be the IoT networks which will be used for increased reach. The IoT efforts will help usher in a new world order, one in which we can easily track vehicles, use smart appliances, smart metering and also create smart security solutions.

As far as technicality is concerned, the companies will make use of NB-IoT (NarrowBand IoT), a technology that helps connect a diversified range of devices and services by making use of telecommunication bands. In other words, the NB-IoT mostly focusses on improving the indoor coverage and will make use of low-cost devices with long battery life and the ability to connect to several other devices at once.

The NB-IoT implementation will use the existing spectrum that is held by Jio and this can be enabled by a simple software upgrade at the base stations. The commercial NB-IoT network has already been successfully implemented by Jio and Samsung in Mumbai and soon they plan on doing the same on a PAN India basis. With this partnership in place, the users should have access to faster internet alongside the new avenues that an IoT powered network throws open.
